Competition. 21-year old Jie has
been making a name for himself as a
new and exciting presence on concert
stages through competition and
performance.
Jie was born in December, 1985 in
Changchun, China. He started to
learn the piano at the age of five
and won 1st prize twice in the State
Piano Competition of Jilin Province,
when he was 9 and 10. In 1998, he
tested into The Xinghai Genius Music
School as a 1st place winner and
started to study under Professor Li
Xiao, the Dean of Xinghai
Conservatory of Music. After winning
the 1st prize in China Five Southern
Provinces Piano Competition and the
1st prize in the China National
Chinese Works Piano Competition,
Jie’s name became one of the most
popular young talented pianists in
China's media. He was invited to
perform for King N. Sihanouk, the
king of Cambodia in 2000, perform
for Chairman Jiang Zemin, the
president of People’s Republic of
China in 2001, and Steve Bruce, CEO
of Steinway & Son Company in 2002.
One year later, Jie received the
“Special Scholarship for Outstanding
Students” from the Yamaha
Corporation, and was invited to tour
with Guangzhou Youth Symphony
Orchestra to perform more than 30
concerts in China, Malaysia,
Singapore and Hong Kong. In 2004, he
was accepted into China Central
Conservatory of Music in Beijing
winning overall from 300 audition
contestants. In the same year, he
received a full Scholarship to Texas
Christian University to study both
for Artist Diploma and in the
Undergraduate program with Dr. Tamas
Ungar, the director of PianoTexas
International Academy and Festival.
His recent success includes top
prizes in the Midland Piano Concerto
Competition, MTNA State competition
and Shenzhen International Concerto
Competition.
During the 2005-2006 concert season,
Jie played 25 concerts through China
and North America. In the 2006-2007
season, he will play concerts in
China, America, Mexico and
Singapore, including a performance
with the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra,
Shenzhen Philharmonic Orchestra and
Qingdao Symphony Orchestra. While
celebrating his 200th concert
performance last summer, the China
Ministry of Education declared
20-year old Jie Yuan,
Artist-in-residence at North China
University.
